Lanolin is a kind of secreted oil attached to wool. It is a pale yellow or brownish ointment, sticky and greasy, and has a weak and specific odor. Soluble in chloroform or ether, soluble in hot ethanol, very slightly soluble in ethanol.

1. Lanolin makes the skin smooth and soft.
2. The first discovery of its beauty effect is because someone found that the hands of Australian sheep workers are generally softer than ordinary people, and later it was found that the role of lanolin.
3. In industry, it is used to prepare advanced anti-rust oil, low temperature lubricant, printing ink, fiber oil agent, leather fat agent, plastic plasticizer, latex defoamer and so on. In medicine, it is used to prepare rheumatism paste, zinc oxide plaster and ointment base.
4. Cosmetic grade lanolin can be used in cold cream, anti-wrinkle cream, anti-crack cream, shampoo, conditioner, hair lotion, lip balm and high grade soap.
5. Commonly used as oil-in-water emulsifier, it is an excellent moisturizing substance.
6. It softens and restores dry or rough skin due to lack of natural moisture. It maintains the skin's usual moisture content by delaying, but not completely preventing, the passage of water through the epidermis.
Lanolin is a kind of secreted oil attached to wool, the main components are sterols, fatty alcohols and triterpene alcohols and about the same amount of fatty acids produced by the ester, about 95%, also contains free alcohol 4%, and a small amount of free fatty acids and hydrocarbons. White or light yellow to dark brown paste translucent body, smelly anhydrous matter with a relative density of 0.946. Softening point 38 ~ 44℃. Acid value<1.0 mgKOH/g. The saponification values ranged from 92 to 106 mgKOH/g. The iodine value is about 18-36 mgKOH/g. Mainly high alcohols and esters, the content of esters in industrial lanolin is about 94%, free alcohols 4%, free acids 1%, and hydrocarbons 1%. The non-hydroxyl ester accounted for about 60%, and the hydroxyl ester accounted for about 40% (mainly α-hydroxyl).
There are two kinds of lanolin products, namely anhydrous lanolin and water lanolin. Anhydrous lanolin is a pale yellow or brownish yellow ointment, sticky and greasy, weak and specific odor. It is easily soluble in chloroform or ether, soluble in hot ethanol, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in water, but can be evenly mixed with about 2 times the amount of water, and has excellent emulsifying properties. Lanolin is not saponified in caustic soda, but can be saponified in ethanol solution of caustic soda by pressure and heating. Strong hygroscopicity. Mp36-42℃, the acid value is not more than 1.5, the saponification value is 92-106 (the heating reflux time is 2h when measured), and the iodine value is 18-35 (the storage time is 4h in the dark when measured).
Aqueous lanolin is lanolin melted and mixed with distilled water. It is a pale yellow or white ointment with 25%-35% water content. Soluble in ether, chloroform, insoluble in water. Lanolin is chemically stable and has good adhesion to metal surfaces.
